The scene comprises foliage and trees with a cottage and church in the background, a "Trespassers Beware" sign and a London milestone. The hinged lid opening to reveal a gilt interior and the original glass stopper. Glass inner body.
Kate Greenaway was a prolific English Victorian artist and writer, known for her children's book illustrations and most notably her very popular depictions of children in imaginary 18th-century costumes in the Queen Anne style. Born in Hoxton in 1846, she was the daughter of a draughtsman and engraver, John Greenaway. She popularised a style of drawing that is instantly recognisable as hers – delicate watercolours of children with animals and birds in the English countryside. Between 1882 and 1884 Kate Greenaway pictures appeared on Sampson Mordan scent bottles almost always with children in the foreground and a house or church in the background.
