Art Deco Silver Sugar Bowl

1900 - 1920
Description

A good example of an antique Sterling Silver sugar basin. It is a good quality piece with angular shaped handles and a slender shape, in the style of the Art Deco period.

It is clearly hallmarked for Sheffield, 1917 and the maker Cooper Brothers & Sons Ltd. It weighs approximately 84g.

It is in good condition for its age. There are some faint surface marks and some minor signs of age and use and a small dent near the base (see photo) but it displays well. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco silver tableware, produced primarily during the 1920s and 1930s, is defined by geometric shapes, clean angular lines, and minimal surface ornamentation.

Sugar bowls from this period were crafted from solid sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver, often featuring hand-soldered geometric handles and polished finishes.

Authentic British sterling silver displays official assay office hallmarks, including the lion passant mark, an assay town symbol, a makers mark, and a date letter.

An antique silver sugar bowl can be repurposed as a functional container for small trinkets on a desk or displayed as part of a dining room sideboard arrangement.

Clean sterling silver using warm soapy water with a soft microfibre cloth, and periodically apply a specialised silver polish to remove oxidisation without scratching the metal.
