A Grand Tour — Italian Micro Mosaic Bracelet, Venezia (Venice)

A fine and intricately worked Italian micro mosaic bracelet, entitled Venezia (Venice), dating to circa 1920.

This rare and colourful bracelet is an evocative souvenir of the Grand Tour, the tradition of wealthy and cultured European travellers visiting the great artistic and historical destinations of Europe. Such micro mosaic jewellery was produced in Italy as fashionable mementoes for travellers, with views and place names commemorating the cities they visited.

The bracelet comprises five gilt-metal panels, each finely decorated with brightly coloured glass micro mosaic tesserae. The central panel is inscribed Venezia, the Italian name for Venice, one of Italy's most celebrated historic cities, situated in the Venetian Lagoon, which is built on more than a hundred small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, which has no roads, just canals and boats.

The bracelet retains its original simple hook-and-loop fastening and a considerable amount of its original gilt finish. It is presented in very good antique condition, commensurate with its age, with the micro mosaic decoration remaining bright and well preserved.
