Jane Short Antiques has dated this Japanese Meiji Silver Bowl to the 1900s.
The piece bears verso the Jungin stamp signifying pure silver of 950 to 999 grade. Shaping a vessel this pure and soft requires unique embossing and chasing skill.
It is hallmarked verso with the Japanese Jungin mark and the silversmith's mark for Konoike of Yokohama.
Konoike Yokichi (b. 1848) was a renowned Japanese Silversmith and artist based in the port city of Yokohama. He ran his workshop between 1880 and 1910 and became famous for creating exceptionally fine, high grade silverware.
He blended traditional hand-hammered Japanese and Chinese artistic styles with functional vessels such as lea and coffee services. His pieces are easily recognised by their high relief, rigorously chased and embossed motifs of twisting dragons, irises and chrysanthemums.
He was commissioned by Liberty & Co, London, in the late 19th Century to make custom pieces exclusively for retail in England.
