Ormolu refers to gilded bronze, a metal-finishing technique developed in the 18th century involving mercury gilding onto bronze or brass surfaces. Popularised in France, ormolu was widely applied to high-end decorative objects, clock cases, and candelabra throughout the Neoclassical and Empire periods.
