This French Belle Epoque silver-plated champagne cooler takes the form of a large urn-shaped trophy cup dating from 1900. It measures 27 cm high, 26 cm wide and 18 cm deep, standing upon a stepped pedestal foot with an engraved border matching the foliate band encircling the upper body. Two angular side handles attach near the rim, and the silver-plated surface exhibits minor signs of age including surface scratches, tarnishing, marks and small bruises. Maker's marks appear on the base for Christofle. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a striking wine or champagne bucket on a sideboard top or within a dedicated barware collection. Its classic French Chateau silhouette and metallic finish integrate smoothly into traditional or transitional dining spaces, providing both a functional vessel and a decorative focal point.

FAQs

Champagne coolers gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century as formal dining etiquette evolved to emphasize chilled wines, with European makers producing decorative silver-plated vessels for grand dining tables.

These vessels were typically formed from base metals such as nickel silver or copper before being electroplated with a fine layer of pure silver, often completed with cast handles and hand-engraved surface patterns.

Authentic pieces carry distinct makers marks or stamped hallmarks indicating the Christofle brand, alongside precise weight, crisp engraved decoration, and uniform electroplating.

A trophy wine cooler functions effectively as a dining table centrepiece, a functional piece of barware on a sideboard, or as a decorative urn for floral arrangements.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dip solutions or scouring pads that could strip the underlying silver plating.
