Large Antique Faux-wood Painted Metal Steamer Trunk C.1890

19th century
Description

A useful and appealing late Victorian metal cabin travel trunk, featuring an exceptionally fine and beautifully preserved faux-wood paint finish, giving the to the sheet-metal body the elegant appearance of a substantial wooden chest.

The exterior retains all of its original hardware, including heavy-duty corner banding and decorative circular studs to the top, and a prominent central front lock with a lid drop-handle, all creating a fantastic industrial-meets-traditional aesthetic.

The deep blue internal finish is in exceptional condition, rendering it perfectly retail-ready for immediate domestic use. With its generous proportions, sturdy build, and flat top, it is perfectly sized to serve as a high-end statement coffee table, end-of-bed blanket box, or a characterful living room storage solution.

The exceptional faux-wood painted grain remains remarkably vibrant, clean, and well-preserved with an authentic, gently weathered patina. The metalwork is structurally sound with no major dents or structural rust. The hardware is complete and fastens securely; please note the original key has been lost to history.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth century, metal steamer trunks were developed as durable, fire-resistant alternatives to traditional wooden luggage for steamship and railway travel. Manufacturers frequently applied trompe loeil paint techniques, known as faux-bois, to give affordable sheet iron or tin the visual appearance of premium polished timber.

These trunks were typically fabricated from pressed sheet iron, zinc, or tin nailed over a lightweight wooden frame. Outer edges and corners were reinforced with heavy iron straps, brass rivets, and cast-metal lock plates to withstand heavy handling during transit.

Authentic pieces display period-correct construction methods, such as hand-painted graining effects, heavy cast-iron latches, folded metal seams, and paper-lined interiors. Natural signs of age include light surface oxidisation on unpainted metal fittings and patinated wear around handles and hinges.

A large trunk functions effectively as a central coffee table in a living room or positioned at the foot of a bed for extra bed linen storage. Its structured shape and metallic accents provide grounded visual texture alongside upholstered furniture.

Dust the painted exterior regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to protect the paint layer. To prevent rust formation, keep the piece in a dry indoor environment and treat bare metal latches or straps with a light application of clear microcrystalline wax.
