René Lalique Opalescent Ondines Plate or Dish

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a René Lalique Ondines opalescent plate or dish, dating from the early 20th century. Ondines are female water spirits such as naiads and oceanids and the term was apparently first used by Paracelsus in the fifteenth century. It is one of Lalique's most famous designs.

The plate is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with a century of use.

The plate is round, measuring 27.5 cm (9 inches) in diameter. The plate is moulded in opalescent glass and is decorated with six Ondines moulded into the lower surface. The plate is 2 cm (0.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a tiny extraneous piece of glass on the upper outside rim caused when the late was extracted from the mould; it is not damaged. The bowl bears a "R. LALIQUE FRANCE No. 3003" maker's mark.

It weighs in at 1 kg. (~ 2 lb. 3 oz.).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Lalique opalescent glass refers to decorative pressed glassware developed by Rene Lalique in the 1920s, characterised by its translucent finish that reflects light in varying hues of blue and amber.

The glassware was created using custom mould-pressing techniques, where chemical compounds such as bone ash or fluorides were added to the molten glass batch to produce a light-reactive milky effect upon cooling.

Authentic pieces feature crisp moulded or wheel-engraved signatures, precise relief details, uniform weight, and characteristic opalescence without prominent modern mould seam flaws.

Display the dish on a sideboard, coffee table, or console table where natural or directional light can illuminate the opalescent material, highlighting the relief design.

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent and a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive pads, harsh chemical cleaners, and dishwashers to prevent surface scratching or thermal shock.
