Description

I dont recall seeing a full set of horse brasses depicting the signs of the Zodiac. The odd one yes but a full 12 no . In addition to these there are a further 10. so 22 in all. They are varying dates but none are new. All are in ok condition and will polish up if you want to do so. They are mounted on belts which are just to keep them together. Not expensive we think. They are various sizes and as stated various ages.

FAQs

Horse brasses are decorative metal plaques originally mounted on leather harness straps for working heavy horses during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They served as protective talismans against bad luck and decorated working horses for parades and competitions.

Traditional horse brasses were heavy cast brass made using sand-moulding techniques, finished by hand-filing along the edges. Later examples from the late Victorian era onwards were stamped from sheet brass or machine-cast in quantity.

Authentic nineteenth-century cast horse brasses typically feature two stud-like projections on the reverse side from the casting process, hand-filed smooth edges, and significant weight. Stamped or modern reproduction brasses are lighter with flat or indented backs.

Leather martingale straps mounted with brasses are displayed vertically beside fireplaces, within hallway alcoves, or along exposed timber beams to introduce warm metal accents and country heritage charm.

The brass plaques can be cleaned with a soft cloth and specialized metal polish, taking care to prevent chemical contact with the adjacent material. The leather straps require treatment with leather conditioner to maintain flexibility.
