Leeds Antiques has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
It has a broad plank lid above a three-panel front, framed with simple gouge-carved decorative mouldings, and stands on integral stile feet. The coffer has an appealing timeworn appearance, with good dark colour to the front and an honest, functional presence. Its generous proportions make it a practical storage chest for a bedroom, hall or living room, while retaining the character expected of an early English country piece.

Condition:
This is an honest, usable coffer with age-related wear, marks and surface variation throughout. The lid has an old repair or replacement section to the left-hand edge, later hinges and added supporting battens beneath. The interior retains the lid from the original candle box or till, although the side and base sections are missing. The bottom boards may be later replacements. There is evidence of old worm, which has been treated.
