Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramic produced in the Arita region from the seventeenth century onwards, taking its name from the port of Imari through which it was shipped globally.

Imari porcelain is crafted from kaolin ceramic clay, fired at high temperatures, and decorated using a multi-step process involving underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red enamel, and hand-applied gilding.

Authentic pieces generally display small spur marks on the underside from kiln firing, subtle variations in hand-painted details, and a distinct colour palette comprising dark blue, iron red, and white grounds.

These decorative ceramics can be mounted on a wall in a gallery layout, showcased on plate stands along a sideboard top, or placed within a glazed display cabinet to introduce pattern and colour.
