FAQs

A travel triptych is a portable three-panel devotional artwork or altarpiece, often crafted in silver or wood, designed to fold shut for protection during transit. Popularised in medieval and late nineteenth-century Revival periods, these items allowed owners to maintain personal religious practices while travelling.

Hanau silver pieces were typically crafted using repousse, casting, and chasing techniques to create detailed relief scenes. The panels were joined with integrated barrel hinges and finished with oxidisation in recessed areas to enhance the architectural depth of the Gothic design.

Authentic Hanau silver items often feature pseudo-hallmarks that mimic earlier historic styles, alongside high-relief figural details and characteristically dense Gothic or Renaissance ornament. Verifying the weight, hand-chased relief lines, and correct hinge construction helps confirm late nineteenth-century origins.

Display the triptych partially open on a dark wood mantelpiece, a bookshelf, or inside a glazed curio cabinet to accentuate its metallic contrast. Positioning it near soft ambient lighting highlights the dimensional relief and intricate silver detailing.

Preserve silver triptychs by dusting them gently with a soft microfibre cloth and using specialised silver polishing cloths rather than abrasive liquid dips. Keep the item in a low-humidity environment to prevent rapid tarnishing and avoid stress on the original panel hinges.
