Description

This is a good Japanese Imari plate with a very pretty design in excellent original condition dating from around 1890.

The plate has an attractive fluted shape with a lovely colour palette to the scrolling floral detail and is beautifully hand gilded.

This is in perfect condition with no damage or restoration.

The plate measures in 22 cms in diameter.

Imari porcelain originated in the Arita region of Japan during the seventeenth century and was exported extensively to Europe via the Dutch East India Company. The style is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue paired with overglaze iron red and gilded embellishments.

These ceramics are crafted from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to produce a durable porcelain body. Artisans apply underglaze cobalt blue before firing, followed by overglaze enamel colours and gold leaf applied in subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical floral or paneled compositions, a distinct palette of cobalt blue, iron red, and gold, alongside hand-painted brushwork. Inspecting the underside for foot rim construction and glaze characteristics further assists in identification.
