Antique English Georgian Bronze Candlestick

18th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

A fine and scarce Early 18th Century Antique English Georgian Bronze Candlestick, the knopped octagonal column rising from a stepped foot of complementary design, the socket pierced such that the spent candle stub could be pricked out. This early feature predates the introduction of the internal push-rod ejector which first made an appearance circa 1720, although clearly the use of both methods of removal continued for many years. This attractive example offered here with a warm soft colour and patina. For similar examples, see Chapter 11 of Ronald F. Michaelis : "Old Domestic Base Metal Candlesticks".

Height ~ 21.60 cm. / 8.50 inches ~ Width ~ 11.40 cm. / 4.50 inches ~ Depth ~ 11.40 cm. / 4.50 inches ~ Year ~ Circa 1730

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Pierced socket hole: candle stubs were pricked out before internal ejector rods were standard.
Octagonal faceted stem and stepped base: early eighteenth-century Queen Anne and George I styling.
Concentric lathe rings on the hollow underside: hand-turned finishing after sand casting.
Softened facet edges: natural smoothing from centuries of handling and cleaning.
Traces of green verdigris in the recesses: long-term aging of the copper alloy.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Georgian candlestick is an 18th-century antique cast bronze object of domestic metalware. It presents a warm aged bronze finish with subtle verdigris patination around the lower stepped foot, showing distinct surface wear and casting irregularities across the metal. The piece stands with an octagonal stepped base featuring a scalloped rim, rising through a faceted baluster stem with multiple knopped turnings, and finishes in a faceted socket pierced with a small circular wax ejector hole. Measuring 22 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 11 cm deep, this compact table accessory sits securely on a desk or mantelpiece in a traditional study, living room, or hallway. Position this candleholder as a functional accent on a wooden mantelpiece or a gentleman's library desk, where its historic metalwork complements period interiors and historic desk settings. The design incorporates a faceted vertical socket and stepped octagonal base, displaying visible tactile wear that evidences its age and early domestic use. It requires minimal maintenance beyond gentle dusting to preserve the aged surface tone.

Georgian candlesticks from the eighteenth century are characterised by cast metal construction, baluster or faceted stems, and stepped, rounded, or octagonal bases.

Most Georgian examples were cast in brass, bronze, paktong, or sterling silver, often featuring hand-chased detailing and seam marks from historical two-part core casting methods.

Authentic pieces typically demonstrate heavy cast weight, subtle surface irregularities, original wax ejector holes near the socket, and accumulated oxidisation in crevices.

Displaying a single period candlestick or an eclectic grouping on a mantelpiece, dining table, or console adds metallic warmth and architectural interest to contemporary decor.

Dust regularly using a dry, lint-free cloth and avoid abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners to preserve the natural surface patina, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly if protection is required.
