Antique Dining Sofreh, Timuri Sangtshuli Tribe, Borderlands of North-east Persia / North-west Afghanistan.

19th century
Description

Private Collection just acquired.

Yet another absolutely incredible weaving! A dining sofreh woven by the Sangtshuli Timuri tribes circa 1870-1880.

The central undyed, natural camel-hair field comprises a myriad of small stylised shrubs woven in overlay/underlay brocading and surrounded by extremely finely-woven borders in weft-substitution technique.

Absolutely stunning are the brocaded skirts each end with an amazing and delicate use of green in the central top and bottom skirts - extremely rare in weavings of the Timuri tribes.

In excellent condition other than a small re-weave in the top left corner of the elem.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sofreh is a traditional flatwoven textile crafted by nomadic and tribal weavers, historically used as a dining cloth during meals or for bread making. Originating primarily from Persia and Afghanistan, these pieces feature geometric motifs and cultural iconography unique to each tribe.

Traditional tribal flatweaves are woven using hand-spun sheep wool for both the warp and weft, occasionally incorporating goat hair for added edge durability. Natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and minerals are used to create the earthy colour palette.

Authentic antique tribal pieces show subtle variations in weave tension, naturally aged colour variations known as abrash, and hand-bound selvedges. They feature traditional geometric or stylised botanical motifs rather than precise, symmetrical factory patterns.

An antique sofreh can be styled as a hallway runner, suspended as a decorative wall tapestry, or placed at the foot of a bed to add texture. Its earthy tones and geometric patterns complement both contemporary minimalist spaces and layered bohemian aesthetics.

Vacuum flatweaves gently without a rotating beater bar to prevent damage to the fibres, and rotate them periodically to ensure even wear. Clean spills immediately by blotting with a clean, damp cloth, and seek professional specialist cleaning for deep maintenance.
