Antique Timuri Prayer-rug, Yaqoub Khani Tribe, Borderlands of North-east Persia / North-west Afghanistan.

19th century
Description

Private Collection just acquired.

This beautiful prayer-rug, made circa 1880 by Timuri Yaqoub Khani tribes, is as finely knotted as they come!

It has been hanging on a wall for many years and has survived in near-mint condition with complete 'elems' or skirts at each end.

The central field and hand-panels are knotted in natural, undyed camel-hair and comprises an intricately-drawn 'tree-of-life' in the centre. All the colours are good from vegetable-dyes.

An amazing rug and certainly best of type.

Size: 1.50 x 0.79m (4' 11" x 2' 7").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Timuri prayer rugs originate from nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the borderlands of North-East Persia and North-West Afghanistan. They are characteristically distinguished by a central arched niche pattern known as a mihrab, deep muted colour palettes dominated by dark brown, navy, and ivory, and stylized geometric tree motifs.

Authentic tribal prayer rugs are constructed using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for both the pile and the structural foundation (warp and weft). Dyes are historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, producing subtle colour variations known as abrash.

Authenticity is indicated by a fully hand-knotted structure, natural dye variations, irregular edge finishing, and soft wool backing. Unlike machine-made alternatives, hand-woven pieces display minor geometric asymmetrical traits in their motifs and weave structure.

Designers frequently layer these textiles over neutral sisal or wooden flooring to add texture and warmth. Due to their scale and intricate detail, prayer rugs are also mounted on walls as textile art or placed in entryways and study alcoves.

Maintenance requires regular gentle vacuuming without a motorized beater bar to avoid pulling fibres. Spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and professional hand-washing by a specialist textile conservator is recommended for periodic deep cleaning.
