This Arts and Crafts table lamp dates from the early twentieth century, circa 1920, and follows an English Country House design aesthetic. The piece comprises a limed oak shaft paired with a brass top component, showing a muted brown colour palette throughout the timber and metal. The lamp stands on a stepped plinth base with four corner feet and incorporates a fluted column shaft with decorative collars at top and bottom. At the summit sits a flared brass fitting with a bronzed effect finish. Visible details include weathered paintwork on the wooden base and an original weathered patina across the metal shade. The lamp measures 59 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Position this table lamp on a sideboard top or a large side table in a living room, hallway, or study. The height and slim profile make it suitable for illuminating a dark corner or providing task lighting when placed alongside books or decorative objects. The neutral muted brown tones and straightforward lines integrate easily into traditional interiors, country house schemes, or eclectic domestic settings. Electrical rewiring ensures the lamp is ready for daily use in a modern home.

FAQs

Limed oak lighting features timber treated with a lime wash process that highlights the open wood grain with a subtle white or pale grey residue. Popularised during the Arts and Crafts movement and the early 20th century, this technique creates a tactile, matte texture on classical columnar or carved forms.

Traditional pieces were carved or turned from solid oak timber before the application of lime paste into the grain. The base is usually weighted or styled with wide plinths, fitted with brass socket assemblies and internal wiring channels.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural wood grain filled with dry pale lime residue rather than an even painted coating. Look for natural age-related patina, historical wiring apertures, and period brass fitments.

Position the lamp on a dark wood sideboard or console table to contrast the muted grey tones of the timber. Pair it with a neutral linen lampshade to complement organic textures within contemporary or rustic interior schemes.

Dust the wooden column regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, or heavy silicone polishes that can discolour or strip the delicate lime finish from the timber grain.
