Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Locking hip flasks were designed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to secure alcoholic spirits against unauthorised consumption. Featuring a small key mechanism integrated into the cap collar, these items were commonly used during hunting, sporting events, or travel.

Most antique spirit flasks were constructed using nickel silver or brass base metals electroplated with a layer of pure silver. Higher-end examples featured sterling silver construction, leather wrapping, or glass liners with removable silver cups.

Authentic Victorian and Edwardian silver-plated flasks typically feature maker marks, such as the trumpet logo of James Dixon & Sons, alongside stamps like EPNS or EP. Inspection of the hinge construction, bayonet fittings, and hand-fitted locking keys further confirms age.

An antique spirit flask can be displayed on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or bookshelf alongside glassware and decanters. Grouping metalware objects of varying heights creates visual balance within traditional or eclectic room settings.

Clean the exterior gently using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish formulated for electroplated items. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can wear away the thin silver layer, and store the item in a dry environment to prevent rapid oxidisation.
