Rare Early 18th Century Walnut Bureau with Original Ironwork, Circa 1720

18th century
Description

A rare and characterful early 18th century walnut bureau dating to circa 1720, of particularly small and desirable proportions. The fall-front opens to reveal a simple and practical fitted interior with a series of pigeon holes, retaining its original iron hinges and lock plate—features that speak to its early date and honest construction.

The exterior is fitted with three long graduated drawers, each retaining period-style brass drop handles, and stands on a shaped bracket plinth base. Of special note is the survival of the original ironwork to the interior, including the hinges and lock mechanism—details rarely found intact and highly indicative of its early 18th century origin.

The walnut has developed a wonderfully rich colour and patina over time, with the expected wear, marks and surface character that give the piece authenticity and charm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A writing bureau from the early 18th century typically features a sloping drop-front flap that opens to reveal internal pigeonholes and small drawers, positioned directly above a graduated chest of drawers.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid walnut or figured walnut veneers laid over oak or pine carcases, finished with hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct drawer linings made of oak or pine, original keyhole escutcheons, and natural surface wear consistent with age.

Place the bureau as a focal point in a hallway, home office, or living room, paired with minimalist contemporary lighting and simple decorative accessories to balance historical character with modern design.

Maintain the finish by keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and applying beeswax polish sparingly to preserve the woods patina.
