Antique Karadasahli Yomut Small Main Carpet with C-centred Kepse Guls, Early 19th Century.

19th century
Description

Size: 9ft 4in x 5ft 6in (285 x 167cm).

Antique Yomut Turkmen main carpet by the Karadashli sub tribe. Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

Early 19th Century.

The carpet has a rich mahogany brown ground colour with diagonal rows of large kepse guls in alternating colours. The kepse guls all contain the c-centres; which is an unusual feature and often points to an early date. The main vertical border is a variation of the Yomut 'curled leaf' design, on an ivory coloured ground. The kepse guls are very large and well drawn with a very spacious feel. The large elem end panels are a feature of the carpet, they also point towards an early date. The elems are complete with no losses and retain a small kilim end finish.

A related carpet is in the Textile Museum collection, Washington, (see Sienknecht, Hans, "A Turkic Heritage. The Development of Ornament on Yomut C-Gul Carpets" in: Hali, Issue 47, October 1989, pp. 30 - 39, specifically figure 20, p. 39).

The carpet is in excellent condition with even wear; a few spots are slightly heavier and medium pile, the sides and ends are totally original. The is one small old re-weave in the lower elem panel.

This is a highly collectable carpet in excellent condition with wonderful colour.

The carpet has not yet been hand washed, as many collectors like to oversee this process themselves. We would be happy to wash the carpet if required.

Stock Number: AOR-123.

James Allen, one of the leading Turkmen authority's in the United States commented as follows on seeing the images of this carpet.

'This magnificent Yomud carpet from the middle of their classic phase; circa 1775-1800 CE. The golden eagle feather shades serve as the goal of the dye maker's ground color of this carpet. This clearly marks it as a Karadashli Yomud weaving. The form of the kepsie gol is archaic with an arrangement of silk worms in the middle designated by their characteristic U mark turned sideways as seen on the silk worms themselves. The kepsie gols are large and well drawn. The rug is in great condition and has provenance!!! The short horizontal main borders are really iconic as are the long vertical main borders which I call the bellowing elephant border'.
