Size: 10ft 7in x 5ft 8in (322 x 173cm).

Antique Yomut Turkmen main carpet with the ‘Dyrnak’ gul design and superb large elem panels at both ends.

Circa 1870.

The carpet has a rich brown ground colour with some very nice blues, ivory and shades of madder red. The carpet has a well drawn curl leaf border. A feature of the carpet are the very wide elem panels at both ends, these are filled with large bird like designs, possibly eagles.

The carpet is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile.

The carpet is suitable for normal domestic use.

The carpet has been hand washed and is ready for use.

Yomut Turkmen carpets are traditional textiles created by nomadic weavers in Central Asia. They are recognised by deep reddish-brown or mahogany field colours, structured geometric patterns, and tribal emblems known as guls, particularly the hooked dyrnak gul design.

These carpets were hand-knotted using wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. The wool was coloured using natural plant and insect dyes, resulting in rich madder reds, dark blues, and ivory accents woven on compact horizontal looms.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-spun wool, natural dye variation, specific knotting methods such as asymmetrical knots open to the right, and traditional tribal field motifs accompanied by woven elem end panels.
