Pearlware is a type of earthenware developed in the late 18th century by British potters, notably Josiah Wedgwood, featuring a glaze with a faint bluish tint that distinguished it from earlier creamware. Production largely peaked between the 1780s and the 1830s before evolving into later ironstone and whiteware bodies.

These items were crafted from refined earthenware clay mixed with flint and white ball clay, then glazed with a lead-based glaze containing a small amount of cobalt oxide to achieve the characteristic blue-white hue. Decoration was predominantly applied using copper-plate transfer printing in blue, often hand-enhanced with coloured enamel highlights.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristics such as fine crazing in the glaze, pooling of the blue tint in recessed areas like foot rims, and characteristic transfer-printed pastoral or chinoiserie motifs typical of the period. Makers marks, impressed culls, or pattern numbers may also appear on the underside, though many early unmarked examples rely on paste and glaze characteristics for dating.

These decorative plates can be displayed mounted on walls in plate racks, showcased within glass-fronted cabinets, or used as centrepieces on sideboards to introduce historical texture and pattern. Their traditional blue and white palettes complement both classic country house aesthetics and transitional spaces seeking layered, collected styling.

Antique ceramics should always be washed by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding soaking or automated dishwashers which can damage fragile historical glazes and overglaze enamel colours. Store them vertically in padded plate stands or with felt dividers between stacked pieces to prevent rim chipping and weight stress.
