This Georgian Scottish provincial silver cream jug is made in Aberdeen by James Gordon around 1775. The piece is crafted from silver with a polished, reflective metallic finish in a bright silver colour, and weighs 175 grams or 6 ozst. The design incorporates a helmet spout, an elongated baluster body, a high loop handle, and a circular pedestal foot resting on a flared base. The body displays engraved initials, and the base carries the maker marks "JG, ABD". The jug measures 16 cm high, 6.5 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this item sits on a sideboard top as part of a traditional display or collection.

Scottish provincial silver refers to items produced outside Edinburgh and Glasgow, crafted by silversmiths in towns such as Aberdeen, Dundee, and Elgin. These pieces were assayed locally rather than at official assay offices, resulting in distinct maker marks and town punches.

Georgian cream jugs were typically constructed from sterling silver, formed using hand-hammering techniques to shape the vessel body, pedestal base, and cast or drawn handles.

Authentic pieces carry specific maker punches associated with James Gordon, often featuring the initials JG alongside town marks linked to Aberdeen, such as three castles or the letters ABD.

A period silver cream jug can be displayed on a dining sideboard, integrated into a drinks tray arrangement, or used as a singular decorative vessel on a bookshelf.

Historic silver should be cleaned using specialised silver foam or cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that remove surface metal. Items should be stored in low-humidity environments wrapped in anti-tarnish fabric.
