FAQs

Apostle spoons are spoons featuring figures of the apostles or other saints on the handle ends, traditionally given as christening gifts in England and continental Europe from the 15th century onwards.

Silver gilt, also known as vermeil, is sterling silver that has been coated with a thin layer of gold, historically applied using a mercury amalgam technique or electroplating in later periods.

Authentic pieces usually feature official hallmarks stamped by the Dutch assay office, indicating silver fineness, tax marks, and makers marks, alongside characteristic craftsmanship styles of the period.

These pieces can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, shadow boxes, or utilized on serving trays as a focal point of historical craftsmanship.

Silver gilt should be cleaned very carefully with a soft microfiber cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or harsh chemical dips that can strip away the delicate gold layer.
