Antique Art Nouveau Scarab Pewter Brooch

19th century
For Sale by Corvidae Antique
Description

A fantastic rare Art Nouveau pewter brooch, in the form of a winged creature (bat? butterfly? moth?!) with a glass scarab beetle at its centre. The scarab is the star here, with a delicate pinkish-violet slightly iridescent finish when it catches the light.

Although the brooch certainly dates from some time around the late Victorian era, it's impossible to say how old the scarab is - scarab jewellery has been produced since Ancient Egyptian times, when the beetle was used as a symbol of the sun god Ra; there was a massive revival of interest in all things Egyptian in Victorian times and it's possible that a 19th century craftsman used a much older scarab as the centrepiece for their brooch.

SIZE: Approximately 6 x 3.5cm. The scarab measures 1.2 x 1.9cm.

WEIGHT: 13.1g.

MATERIALS: Pewter, glass, metal pin.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition, see photos.

ERA: Estimated late Victorian Arts and Crafts c.1880s-1910

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Art Nouveau movement embraced natural motifs, while archaeological discoveries fueled an Egyptian Revival trend. The scarab beetle, an ancient Egyptian symbol of rebirth and transformation, became a popular subject for jewellers who combined stylized insect forms with fluid, organic metalwork.

Craftsmen during the Art Nouveau era utilised a wide range of materials, including cast pewter, sterling silver, enamel, molded glass, and semi-precious stones. Metal components were frequently hand-finished or cast to showcase intricate relief details such as wings, tendrils, and stylized flora.

Authentic period pieces feature characteristic fluid lines, naturalistic insect or botanical themes, and era-appropriate closures such as C-clasps or simple hinge pins. Pewter items often exhibit a soft, muted grey patina and subtle surface wear consistent with age rather than uniform modern machine finishing.

A metal scarab brooch can be fastened to the lapel of a tailored blazer, pinned to a heavy wool coat, or attached to a silk scarf to add a vintage accent. It can also be worn on structured hats or fabric handbags as a decorative focal point.

Pewter should be cleaned gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive polishes, or prolonged submersion in water, as these can strip the natural aged patina and damage glass or stone cabochons.
