A fantastic rare Art Nouveau pewter brooch, in the form of a winged creature (bat? butterfly? moth?!) with a glass scarab beetle at its centre. The scarab is the star here, with a delicate pinkish-violet slightly iridescent finish when it catches the light.Although the brooch certainly dates from some time around the late Victorian era, it''s impossible to say how old the scarab is - scarab jewellery has been produced since Ancient Egyptian times, when the beetle was used as a symbol of the sun god Ra; there was a massive revival of interest in all things Egyptian in Victorian times and it''s possible that a 19th century craftsman used a much older scarab as the centrepiece for their brooch.SIZE: Approximately 6 x 3.5cm.
