An Impressive Antique Italian Carved Pinewood Torchere, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

This finely modelled Italian torchere is carved throughout in pinewood and displays a strong classical influence typical of late 19th-century Italian decorative carving. The tall, elegant stem rises from a square tapering base, each face richly carved with scrolling foliage and stylised classical urn motifs. The base is supported on four boldly carved claw feet, lending both stability and sculptural presence.

The column is further embellished with a sequence of turned and carved sections, including leaf-carved collars and gadrooned elements, leading to a circular candle platform surmounted by the original tall candle spike. The surface retains a beautifully mellowed patina, with the pale pine showing gentle tonal variation, wear and minor marks consistent with age and use, all of which enhance its authentic character.

Originally intended for use as a decorative candle stand, this torchere works equally well today as a statement interior piece, ideal for flanking a fireplace, lining a hallway, or adding height and architectural interest to a room. Its classical form and warm patination allow it to complement both traditional country house interiors and more eclectic schemes.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A torchere is a tall carved stand originally created to hold candles, prickets, or oil lamps, widely used in Italian ecclesiastical and aristocratic interiors from the Renaissance through the early 20th century.

Craftsmen typically utilised softwoods such as pine or lime for intricate hand-carving, often finishing the surface with gilding, paint, or natural beeswax over a turned central column.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tool marks, traditional joinery at the pedestal base, minor structural shrinkage inherent to aged timber, and natural surface wear along high-relief carvings.

Positioning a single torchere or a pair within an empty corner, beside a fireplace alcove, or framing an entrance hall adds architectural height and historical texture to contemporary room schemes.

Dust regularly using a soft microfibre cloth, keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement, and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber.
