Art Nouveau Style Table Lamp

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a great early electric table lamp, dating to around late 1910s.

Cast in bronze with its original gilt-style finish, the piece has a really decorative, almost Art Nouveau feel, with flowing scroll arms and floral detailing throughout. The surface has a lightly textured, almost hammered look, which helps catch the light nicely, with the original gilt tones coming through on the high points, giving it a real sense of depth and warmth.

It was made as an electric light from the outset rather than being converted, with the wiring running through the arms and original fittings still in place. The form takes inspiration from earlier candle lighting, but this is very much an early electric example.

A good decorative piece with plenty of presence, works nicely on a side table or console and adds a bit of warmth and character to a space.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau lighting is defined by fluid, asymmetrical lines and forms inspired by nature, including vine tendrils, flower petals, and insect wings. Emerging in the late 19th century, this movement favoured cast metal, glass, and sculpted details that blurred the line between functional object and decorative sculpture.

Lamp bases from this period were predominantly crafted from cast brass, bronze, or spelter, often finished with gilding or dark patination. The casting process allowed for intricate organic textures, floral bobeches, and fluid sweeping arms.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patination in crevices, sharp hand-finished chasing details from the casting mould, and notable weight in the base. Original electrical fittings, threaded socket collars, and signs of historical rewiring also help establish age.

Position the lamp on a sleek console table or sideboard to create a contrast between organic historical curves and minimalist modern architecture. Adding understated silk shades or exposed filament bulbs ensures the metallic metalwork remains the visual focal point.

Dust regularly using a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth to prevent dirt accumulation in carved recesses. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes, as these can strip original gilding or historical patination; original electrical wiring should be inspected by a qualified electrician.
