Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Turned ring legs on cup castors: wood-turning from the late Victorian years.
Pierced brass bail handles: late nineteenth-century revival of Georgian patterns.
Dovetailed pine drawer sides behind oak faces: solid provincial workshop joinery.
Smooth edge wear and patination across the top: honest handling over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian desk dates from 1880 to 1900 and is made from oak in a warm brown colour with a polished finish. The piece rests on turned legs fitted with brass castors and features a central kneehole recess with a decorative carved frieze underneath the main drawer. Seven drawers are arranged in a pedestal configuration, with graduated side drawers, and all retain their original brass swan neck handles, escutcheons and locks. The rectangular top provides a substantial workspace with visible wood grain patterns running lengthwise. The desk measures 77 cm high, 122 cm wide and 60 cm deep. It functions as a practical writing workstation for a study, home office or traditional library space.

FAQs

Late Victorian desks produced between 1880 and 1900 typically feature solid oak construction, functional drawer arrangements, turned legs or plinth bases, and decorative brass hardware. The design reflects a shift toward practical home office and study furniture driven by late nineteenth-century commercial expansion.

Victorian desks were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring hand-cut or early machine-cut dovetail drawer joints. Handles and escutcheons were typically cast in brass, while legs were turned on lathes and often mounted on brass castors for mobility.

Authentic pieces exhibit uneven wear on working surfaces, hand-finished drawer linings, original brass drop handles with natural patination, and age-consistent oxidisation around steel screws and locks. Original castors and period-appropriate drawer construction further confirm late nineteenth-century origin.

Integrate an antique oak desk into a modern room by pairing it with a contemporary desk chair or sleek table lamp to create visual contrast. Position the desk against modern neutral wall paint or architectural panelling to accentuate the warm tone of the natural timber grain.

Preserve the finish by applying high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the oak wood and protect against drying out. Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, or fading.
