It comprises a rising cylinder roll-top enclosing an extending desk surface with an original leather covering, set above twin pedestals fitted with three small drawers on each side, solid wooden knob handles, key escutcheons, and plinth bases, while a low gallery rail tops the upper surface and light surface marks show age. Practical dimensions are 111 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 67 cm deep. Suitable for use in a home study, library, or traditional home office workspace, this piece provides a functional writing surface alongside storage drawers. It accommodates day-to-day writing and administrative tasks while maintaining a traditional aesthetic suited to period interiors.

FAQs

Popularised in the late 18th and 19th centuries, a cylinder desk features a rigid, curved wooden shutter that rotates backward into the casing to reveal an internal writing surface and small compartment drawers.

Authentic antique cylinder desks are constructed primarily from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints and solid timber pedestal framing.

Key identification features include original wooden or brass drawer pull knobs, hand-cut dovetail joints on the pedestal drawers, natural aging and patination across the oak timber, and a smoothly operating wooden cylinder mechanism.

Position the desk within a dedicated study or quiet alcove, pairing the warm oak timber with a contemporary desk lamp, neutral wall tones, or a modern leather desk chair for visual contrast.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the oak and preserve the original finish.
