Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Flared spade feet on square tapering legs: Arts and Crafts cabinetmaking.
Broad medullary ray figure across the top: quarter-sawn oak.
Slotted screws securing the brass backplate: fixing before modern cross-head screws.
Natural darkening and shrinkage around the joints: unhurried ageing over decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This small Victorian Arts and Crafts desk dates from 1900 and displays a Glasgow School influenced design. Constructed from quarter swan oak in a warm brown timber colour, the piece has a rectangular top, a single central drawer fitted with a decorative brass drop handle, and square tapered legs with shaped feet. Twin lower stretchers join the legs to provide stability. General surface wear, marks, and a battle scar to the top corner above the front leg demonstrate its original patina and age. The table measures 71 cm high, 63 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. Practical for everyday use, this writing table suits placement in a home study, bedroom, or living area as a compact workstation or occasional writing desk. Its sturdy construction and narrow proportions allow it to fit easily into smaller interior spaces while providing useful surface area and drawer storage.

FAQs

Developed in late 19th-century Britain, Arts and Crafts furniture emphasises handcrafted construction, simple geometric lines, and natural wood grains like oak.

These pieces typically feature solid English oak, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, and cast brass drop handles or iron hardware.

Look for visible joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, quartersawn oak grain patterns, honest construction methods, and unpretentious form devoid of excessive ornamentation.

Position the piece in a study alcove or hallway as a console, paired with a simple desk lamp and modern neutral wall tones to highlight the warm wood grain.

Apply high-quality beeswax twice yearly, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and keep the timber away from direct heat sources and moisture to prevent movement or warping.
