A Large Antique Victorian 18ct Gold Diamond Set Oval Locket Circa 1880

19th century
Description

A Large Victorian 18ct Gold Oval Locket with Diamond-Set Sash, circa 1880

A fine and substantial Victorian oval locket in solid 18 karat gold, dating to circa 1880 and notable for its generous scale and elegant diamond-set decoration. The locket opens via a smooth hinged mechanism to reveal two oval interior compartments, originally intended for photographs or personal mementos, reflecting the deeply sentimental nature of Victorian jewellery.

The polished gold exterior is embellished with a contrasting applied vertical sash motif set with three round-cut diamonds of approximately 15 points each, providing refined sparkle against the rich warmth of the gold. The clean oval form and restrained ornament place the focus on proportion and materials, making this an especially wearable and timeless example of late Victorian design.

The locket is fitted with a substantial solid gold bail, suitable for suspension from a chain or ribbon, and its larger-than-usual size gives it strong presence when worn.

A beautiful and personal jewel, equally suited to collectors of Victorian jewellery or those seeking a meaningful antique pendant with both elegance and historical character.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Lockets became immensely popular during the Victorian era as personal keepsakes designed to hold miniature portraits or locks of hair. Mid-to-late nineteenth-century designs often incorporated symbolic gemstones, geometric bands, and high-carat yellow gold.

Victorian lockets were commonly crafted from 15ct or 18ct yellow gold, rose gold, or sterling silver. Gemstones such as diamonds, pearls, and sapphires were frequently flush-set or star-set into the metalwork.

Authentic pieces from this period typically feature British hallmarks or makers marks, substantial gold weight, hand-assembled hinges, and characteristic star-setting around the gemstones.

Antique lockets can be worn on long gold chains to create a focal point over modern knitwear or layered with contemporary fine pendants for a textured, personal look.

Clean gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and mild soap water, avoiding submersion if internal photos or original glass inserts are present. Store separately in a velvet-lined box to prevent surface scratching.
