Description

Set of seven 18th Century French Chantilly soft-paste porcelain plates. They feature a lobed, scalloped rim and a molded basket-weave border, known as the ozier pattern. The center of each plate is hand-painted with polychrome floral sprays, and some may include small painted insects. The plates have a white ground with a thin gilt or blue enamel line applied to the rim edge. The undersides feature hand-painted blue decorator's marks, consistent with 18th-century factory practices. The material is soft-paste porcelain with a tin glaze. Dimensions are approximately 23.5 cm in diameter.

Produced initially at Vincennes before transferring to Sevres in 1756, 18th-century Sevres porcelain is recognised for its soft-paste composition, vivid polychrome enamel decoration, and delicate gilding.

Early Sevres manufacture utilised a soft-paste porcelain body composed of frit, sand, nitre, sea salt, gypsum, and chalk, coated in lead glaze and finished with hand-painted enamel and gold leaf accents.

Authentication involves inspecting the underglaze factory mark of interlaced Ls, identifying date letters and painter marks, noting minor soft-paste firing imperfections, and assessing the quality of freehand enamel brushwork.

These decorative ceramics can be arranged in a symmetrical gallery wall layout, positioned on plate stands atop sideboards, or displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet.
