Inlaid Silver Indian Bidri Vase

Description

This is a beautiful 19th century Indian silver Bidri ware vase in excellent condition dating from around 1900.

Bidri ware is a 14th century, historically rich Indian metal handicraft originating from Bidar in Karnataka.

It features stunning silver or brass inlay work against a uniquely blackened zinc and copper alloy surface. This intricate art involves molding, engraving, and oxidizing, creating decorative items like vases, boxes, and jewellery.

Developed during the Bahmani Sultans' rule in the 14th century, it is named after the city of Bidar. The distinctive black, matte coating is achieved using a special soil from the Bidar fort, which is mixed with ammonium chloride.

This is a particularly stylish vase with a bold, crisp design and a very attractive shape.

The vase measures 25 cms high by 13 cms in diameter.

Bidriware originated in the 14th century in Bidar, Karnataka, during the reign of the Bahmani Sultans. The technique evolved from Persian metal inlay traditions and developed into a distinct Indian metalworking art form.

Bidriware is constructed from a primary cast alloy composed predominantly of zinc mixed with small amounts of copper. Pure silver wire or sheet is then inlaid into chiseled surface grooves before the body is chemically blackened.

Authentic pieces feature continuous hand-hammered silver inlay flush with the surface against a matte black alloy ground. The dark contrast is achieved through an oxidation process using local chloride-rich soil rather than surface paint.

Position Bidriware against light or neutral backdrops to accentuate the high-contrast silver pattern. It functions effectively as a sculptural accent on a library shelf, dark wood console, or mantelpiece.

Dust the item regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and avoid chemical metal polishes or water exposure. A light application of microcrystalline wax can be applied periodically to protect the silver inlay and oxidized alloy ground.
