Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield plate refers to a technique discovered in the 18th century where a layer of silver was fused onto copper ingots before being rolled into sheets. This process allowed craftsmen to create silver-appearing hollowware and tableware at a fraction of the cost of solid sterling silver.

These vessels were typically made from Old Sheffield plate, pewter, or solid sterling silver. The construction involved rolling fused silver-and-copper sheets, seam-joining the body, and fitting cast handles, thumbpieces, and hinged lids.

Authentic pieces often show early maker or pseudo-hallmarks, trace copper exposure where the silver coating has worn (known as bleeding), and seam joints from hand rolling. Period items also feature die-struck decorative elements and hand-raised forms typical of 18th-century manufacture.

Position the item as a sculptural accent on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or bookcase to add historical texture. It can also function as an elegant container for dried botanicals or stand alone as a focal point within a traditional metalware display.

Clean gently with a soft cloth and a specialized non-abrasive silver polish to prevent wearing down the thin layer of silver plate. Store in a dry environment to minimise tarnish and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could expose the underlying copper core.
