Fabulous Georgian Silver Snuff Box By Thomas Shaw, Birmingham 1827

This beautiful Georgian silver snuff box is dated Birmingham 1827 and was made by the renowned Thomas Shaw, who was part of the ''toy making'' fraternity . Of conventional rectangular form, the front with vacant cartouche and the back with an engine-turned background. The hinged cover with a raised thumb piece and engined-turned borders. The sides embossed with foliate decorations. Opening to reveal the original rich gilt interior. Excellent silver gauge, feels heavy when picked up.
 
* from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles.
