This one light basket French antique chandelier originates from the south of France and dates from the 1920 period. The design has a French Chateau style, formed from brass, glass and crystal materials with a clear and aged brass colour scheme. The tiered upper structure has two layers of icicle and teardrop crystals hanging from a central gilt stem above an ornate filigree pierced brass rim. The bottom bag features large faceted octagonal button crystals, coffin drops, and graduated button crystals gathering into a plain gilt bottom boss, finished with a faceted bomb drop. Visible details include link chain hardware at the top and delicate metal arms supporting the upper crystal drops. Measuring 54 cm in height and 30 cm in width, this light fixture is suited for suspension from a ceiling in a hallway, dining room or living space. The construction includes a restored finish, and the item arrives wired and pat tested for immediate installation in a domestic interior.

FAQs

Originating in eighteenth-century France, basket chandeliersoften referred to as sac-a-perlesfeature a concentric metal frame draped with strung crystal beads or faceted drops forming a lower basket shape. The design evolved through the Empire and Regency periods to maximise light diffusion from candlelight and early electric bulbs.

Traditional construction incorporates cast brass or gilt bronze for the structural rims and arms, paired with hand-cut glass or high-lead crystal drops. The drops are individually linked using fine brass pin wire to form cascading tiers and hemispherically curved bases.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-formed metal frames showing subtle hand-tool marks and natural surface patination rather than uniform modern plating. The glass drops typically show hand-cut facets, minor hand-finishing irregularities, and brass wire pins connecting each element.

Suspended in a hallway, dressing room, or above a bedside table, a basket chandelier introduces refined texture and historical character. Pairing intricate crystal work against plain plastered walls or painted panelling creates a balanced architectural contrast.

Dust the crystal drops regularly with a dry microfibre cloth. For deep cleaning, spray a mild solution of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water onto a cloth and gently wipe individual drops, taking care not to pull the delicate brass wire connectors or moisture into the wiring socket.
