A plafonnier is a ceiling-mounted or suspended bowl-shaped light shade that became highly popular during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s, designed to diffuse ambient light evenly across a room.

Traditional Art Deco lighting utilized pressed glass, slag glass, and marbled glass often paired with metal chains and fixtures made from brass, bronze, or chromium-plated steel.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-specific manufacturing techniques such as mold seams, weight of the glass, aged patination on metal components, and characteristic geometric or organic moulding patterns from the early to mid-20th century.

Such fixtures serve as a statement centrepiece in hallways, dining spaces, or bedrooms, bridging contemporary minimalist decor with historic character through unique textures and diffused illumination.

Glass components should be gently cleaned using warm water and mild dish soap, avoiding harsh chemical abrasives, while metal chains should be dusted carefully to preserve any original historical patina.
