Sardine dishes gained popularity during the Victorian era in the late 19th century as tinned fish became a fashionable luxury item for breakfast and luncheon tables.

These pieces typically combine electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) mounts and lids with cut or moulded crystal or glass liners and matching underplates.

Authenticity is determined by hallmarks or makers marks on the silver plate, the weight and clarity of the crystal liner, and the quality of the chased or cast figural lid handle.

It can be utilised as a decorative catch-all on a dressing table or displayed on a sideboard to add historical texture to a contemporary tablescape.

Clean the silver plate gently with a specialised non-abrasive polish to preserve the finish, and wash the glass liner by hand in warm soapy water.
