Barley twist, or spiral-turned wood, gained prominence in British furniture making during the 17th century, particularly within the Jacobean and Carolean eras, before experiencing a revival in the 19th century.

These pieces typically combine dense hardwoods such as walnut or oak for the structural base with flat-woven wool textiles like kilim or kelim for the upholstery, often finished with brass tacks.

Authentication relies on examining joinery methods, hand-turned tool marks on the timber, natural oxidisation of the wood, and the age and wear patterns of the textile upholstery.

This item functions effectively as an occasional seat, a coffee table alternative when topped with a tray, or an accent piece at the foot of a bed within eclectic or transitional spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, gently vacuuming the weave with a brush attachment, and occasionally feeding the wooden frame with appropriate furniture wax.
