Tinderboxes were essential domestic and travel tools used for creating fire before the invention of friction matches, combining a striking surface, flint, and charcloth within a single enclosed vessel.

These items were typically constructed from heavy gauge sheet brass, often joined using hand-soldered seams, riveted handles, and turned or spun components.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples exhibit natural oxidation, hand-tool marks, traditional joinery methods, and wear patterns consistent with age and genuine historical usage.

This piece works well as a curated decorative object on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or side table, adding historical texture and a touch of metallic warmth to contemporary spaces.

Preserve the piece by keeping it in a stable environment away from excess moisture, cleaning only with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth, and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina.
