Description

A fairly large Victorian blanket chest, retaining its original penny-end strap hinges and featuring a candle box inside on the right-hand side. There is no key for the lock, which is quite typical for pieces of this age.

I believe the chest is made from ash, and it’s in very nice condition for its period. When waxed, we have fitted a new pine plinth along the bottom, which blends in nicely with the piece. It is currently in bare wood and can be purchased as it is for £280, or £327 if waxed.

Dimensions: height 18.5", width 41", depth 19.5"

(approximately 47 cm x 104 cm x 50 cm).

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian blanket chests were utilitarian household items constructed during the 19th century, primarily used for storing linens, blankets, and woollens to protect them from moths and dust before fitted wardrobes became standard.

These chests were typically crafted from solid deal or Scots pine, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints at the corners, strap hinges, and simple bracket or plinth bases.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetailing, period ironmongery like escutcheons and strap hinges, and timber characteristics showing genuine age, tool marks, and historical patina.

An antique chest can be positioned at the foot of a bed for textile storage, used as a coffee table in a living room to add warmth and texture, or placed in a hallway as a functional surface.

Maintain the timber by avoiding direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, cleaning with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the wood.
