Victorian Oil Lamp with Painted Floral Font and Duplex Burner, c.1890
A decorative late Victorian oil lamp of good scale and presence, dating to around 1890 and fitted with a brass Bruxelles duplex burner. The glass font is of terracotta-red ground, hand-painted in enamel and gilt with sprays of flowers and a butterfly in the Japonisme taste, reflecting the fashionable influence of the Aesthetic Movement.
The lamp stands on a circular ceramic plinth with brass mounts and a spiral-fluted column, the combination of materials lending both weight and refinement. The quality of the casting and fittings, together with the duplex mechanism, reflect the Continental makers’ determination to rival the best English burners of the period.
The ensemble is completed with a period opaline yellow glass shade, moulded in relief with foliate decoration and finished with a ruffled rim, together with a clear glass chimney. The proportions are well balanced, and the lamp retains strong decorative
...appeal when lit or unlit.
