A vinaigrette is a small pocket container popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, featuring a perforated grille inside the lid designed to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar.

They are typically constructed with a sterling silver mount and lid, often paired with coloured or hand-cut glass bodies such as ruby or cranberry glass.

Authenticity is usually confirmed by examining the hallmarks on the silver components for maker marks, standard sterling marks, and date letters, alongside period-appropriate hand-cut glass facets.

These small decorative objects can be displayed inside glass cabinets, on mantelpieces, or on a dressing table tray to add a touch of historical detail to a room.

Silver components should be cleaned gently with a specialised microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh abrasive polishes that might damage the metal or the adjacent glass surface.
