Opus Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
The internal section has a central circular compartment for holding wax tapers or wax sticks and matches would have been stored around the outside and also in the base of the Go to Bed which unscrews as well. Wafer seals may also have been stored in here. This item would have had two functions for lighting when going to bed and also for use on a desk for lighting wax sticks for seals on letters.
