The Edwardian period spans the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, though the style often extended to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. It is characterised by lighter, more refined designs often drawing inspiration from earlier Georgian and neoclassical motifs.

Authentic period frames typically feature a thin sheet of sterling silver mounted over a wooden or composition core, backed with wood or papier-mache, and lined with velvet, watered silk, or baize. The corners are often mitred and soldered, with hinged wooden struts attached to the rear for desktop support.

Authenticity is primarily verified through clear metal hallmarks stamped on the silver border, which indicate the assay office, standard of silver, and date letter. Genuine older pieces also exhibit natural tarnishing patterns, minor surface wear, and period-appropriate fasteners such as threaded screws or traditional turn-buttons on the backing.

An antique silver frame introduces metallic contrast and historic character to modern spaces when placed on a minimalist desk, a dark wood mantelpiece, or a simple bookshelf. Mixing polished silver with organic textures like natural wood and linen creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a soft microfibre cloth and a specialist silver polish, taking care to avoid abrasive materials that can wear down thin sheet metal. Velvet or fabric backings should be kept dry and protected from direct sunlight to prevent fading and material degradation.
