Description

A well-modelled Georgian Irish silver sauceboat raised on three paw feet with shell-moulded terminals, the body richly chased with birds among flowering scrolls. The beaded rim and leaf-capped scroll handle are typical of Dublin work of the period. The vacant reserve was long ago professionally filled, leaving a smooth panel that sits neatly within the original chased frame — a feature commonly seen on presentation pieces.

The underside shows radiating flutes with dotted beading and clear maker’s mark for Ambrose Boxwell, together with incomplete hallmarks including the initials IW.

Georgian silver encompasses pieces made during the reigns of the four British King Georges (1714 to 1830), characterised by classical proportions, ornate chasing, and meticulous craftsmanship.

Georgian holloware and flatware were typically crafted from sterling silver, regulated by strict assay office standards, often featuring cast elements and hand-chased ornamentation.

Authentic items feature hallmarks stamped directly into the metal, usually including a makers mark, a standard mark such as the sterling lion passant, a date letter, and a town mark.

Antique silver adds textural contrast and historical depth when placed as a focal accent on contemporary dining tables, sideboards, or open shelving.

Preserve antique silver by storing it in tarnish-resistant cloths, washing it gently with mild soap and warm water when necessary, and avoiding abrasive polishes that wear away thin silver layers.
