An armorial plate is a piece of decorative ceramic, porcelain, or earthenware painted or printed with a family heraldic coat of arms, crest, or motto. Originating in Europe and Asia for aristocrats, these pieces became popular collectible decorative display items during the nineteenth century.

Victorian armorial wares were commonly manufactured using dense earthenware, ironstone, or soft-paste and hard-paste porcelain. Decorative elements were typically executed using overglaze enamels, transfer printing, and hand-applied gilding over a clear lead glaze.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces often exhibit fine crazing to the lead glaze, slight inconsistencies in hand-painted enamelling, and visible wear along the foot rim. Potters impressed marks, painted painter numbers, or printed registry diamonds on the underside also assist in dating.

Armorial plates can be displayed using plate stands on a mahogany sideboard, arranged within a glazed cabinet, or mounted on a wall with plate hangers to create a structured gallery feature in a dining room or hallway.

Clean glazed pottery by wiping gently with a soft microfibre cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm water and mild dish soap. Avoid immersion, harsh abrasive pads, and chemical detergents, as these can strip overglaze enamel decoration and gilded accents.
