Silver gilt, also known as vermeil, is sterling silver that has been coated with a thin layer of gold, historically applied using a mercury amalgam technique or electroplating in later periods.

Antique silver mugs were traditionally crafted using techniques such as raising from a flat sheet of metal, casting for handles, and repousse or chasing for surface ornamentation.

Authentic pieces typically feature period-specific makers marks, hallmarks indicating silver purity, and exceptional weight and craftsmanship characteristic of the silversmithing workshop.

An antique silver vessel can be styled on a mantelpiece or bookshelf as a decorative object, or utilized functionally as a vase for small floral arrangements to add metallic texture.

Silver gilt items should be cleaned sparingly with a soft, lint-free cloth and specialized non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh dips that can strip the delicate gold layer.
