Georgian desk accessories originated during the reigns of King George I through George IV (1714-1830), a period marked by rising literacy and the widespread use of handwritten correspondence, which necessitated dedicated tools like letter openers and seals.

Traditional letter openers from the 18th and 19th centuries were typically constructed using a combination of sterling silver, mother-of-pearl, ivory, bone, and precious metals, often featuring handcrafted ferrules and detailed engravings.

Authentic Georgian silver pieces can be identified by hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark indicating silver purity, a duty mark, and a date letter corresponding to the assay office.

An antique letter opener can be displayed flat on a leather blotter, placed inside a glass-topped display tray on an office desk, or stood upright within a decorative desk tidy to add tactile historical interest to a study.

Silver components should be cleaned gently using a non-abrasive specialist silver polishing cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips, while mother-of-pearl should only be wiped down with a soft, damp cloth to prevent damage to its delicate iridescent surface.
