This Edwardian solid sterling silver pen wipe is designed for a gentleman's library and features a cast metal pheasant figurine mounted on a layered felt pad. The figure depicts a standing pheasant with detailed plumage and head crest, secured to a circular base. Below the metal mount sit four layers of black and red felt with scalloped edges, showing light use without tears. The piece measures 3 cm high, 5 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. It is hallmarked for Chester 1909 with the maker's mark of Sampson Mordan & Co. Place this desk accessory on an office desk or a writing table to hold pens and pencils while adding traditional desk decoration. The compact circular form fits neatly alongside inkwells, blotters, and other writing implements in a study or home office. The combination of bright silver metal and textured red and black fabric provides a functional stationery tool that reflects early twentieth-century desk organization.

A pen wipe is a 19th and early 20th-century desktop accessory designed to clean excess ink from steel dip pen nibs. They typically featured decorative metal figures, such as animals or birds, mounted atop layered absorbent fabric pads.

These desk accessories combine cast silver or silver-plated figures mounted onto multi-layered disks or sheets of felt, wool, or cloth. The fabric layers absorbed residual ink without damaging delicate pen nibs.

Authentic pieces often feature hallmarks on the metal figure denoting the silversmith, purity mark, and town mark. Genuine age is also indicated by natural oxidisation on the silver and historical wear or ink staining on the layered felt.

Position the piece on an office desk, blotter, or atop a stack of books within a library setting. Its compact scale makes it a subtle historic accent for traditional and eclectic study spaces.

Gently dust the metal figurine with a soft brush and polish silver elements with a dry silver cloth, taking care not to snag the felt base. Keep the item in a dry location away from direct sunlight to preserve the historic textiles.
